Tips for Cutting Calories at Happy Hour

Who doesn’t love happy hour?  After a long day at work most people are in desperate need of a drink, and happy hour is the place to satisfy that craving!

Personally, I’m a big fan of happy hour.  I don’t abuse it though. I probably only partake in this joyous event twice a month or so, which is good, because if you’re not careful, getting too happy too often can make you fat (and broke). You don’t want to be either of those…

How to Keep Yourself in Check at Happy Hour

If you do go out to happy hour a lot, never fear, you are not destined to become a big fat pig person. All you need is a little common sense and a decent amount of self-restraint. Follow these tips to control yourself at happy hour:

  • Snack Beforehand: Personally, I’m always STARVING at the end of the day. When I get home I head straight to the refrigerator for some delicious Greek yogurt. When I’m headed to the bar after work, instead of my refrigerator, this becomes a problem. After a drink or two, I’m so hungry that I just order something off the bar menu, which is rarely a good idea (especially at Pittsburgh yinzer bars, where every item involves french fries or cheese). To avoid nasty situations involving fried food, I started bringing a snack to work for the end of the day. Works like a charm!
  • Drink Water: No one wants to go to happy hour and drink water, but having a glass between cocktails keeps you nice and hydrated. We all know that after a few cocktails you loose your good judgement, which can cause you to do crazy things like eat an entire pizza. Yuck!
  • Create an Exit Strategy: Before you even step foot in the bar, decide how long you plan to stay. One more drink can easily turn into three, if you’ve got no game plan for the rest of the evening. It’s fine if your plans are to stay out all night, but at least decide on a time to leave happy hour and go to dinner. Happy hours lasting until 11pm are never a good thing…
  • Avoid Cocktails: Cocktails can be delicious, but they also be giant calorie mongers. Unless the bar you’re at offers “Skinny Cocktails,” stick with wine or light beer.

Although this may sound crazy at first, the more self-control you can muster up at happy hour, the more you’ll enjoy it. You’ll wake up feeling refreshed, with no fatty regrets from the night before, and what’s not to love about that?
